Top Care Tips for Hair Twists

Twist hairstyles do take a bit of extra TLC after you leave the salon. You can’t just go about your business as you do every day – you need to nurture your new hairstyle to keep it in the best shape possible and make it last.

Here are some of the best things you can do to care for your hair twists:

  1. Avoid Getting Your Twists Wet – When you take a shower or bath, make sure you have protection on your twists to keep them from getting wet. If you want to wash your hair, try using a dry shampoo to get your scalp clean; the less water you get on your twists, the longer they tend to last.
  2. Cover Your Twists at Night – You don’t want your twists getting all frizzy from rubbing up against a coarse pillowcase all night; put a soft headscarf on at night to keep your hair protected. You might even consider buying a satin pillowcase that won’t irritate your twists in case your headscarf comes off.
  3. Use Only High-Quality Products – When choosing a moisturizer or other hair care product, make sure you’re using those with natural, high-quality ingredients such as shea butter, almond oil, and coconut oil. Stay away from products that have mineral oil in them, which comes from petroleum.
  4. Don’t Do an Up-Do Every Day – Sure, it’s fun to play around with your style and try various pony-tails, buns, and other up-dos. But if you do this daily, the constant tugging on your hairline could end up causing trouble. Try to limit the number of up-dos to just one or two per week to make your twists last longer.
