Keeping Your Box Braids Looking Fly
Whether you’ve had your hair braided before or not, we at Ramas always aspire for you to have a comfortable experience. Box braids come in all shapes and styles. Box braiding is done with three-stranded plates and creates a box or triangle shape on your scalp to create long braids that can either be chunky or thin. They are not tight to the scalp and shouldn’t have flyaways or frizz.
If you’ve gotten braids done before at a different salon and weren’t happy with your Fishers Box Braiding, we have a few ideas as to why. Follow our tips for maintaining your hair before and after your braiding appointment to make your look last.
Let Your Hair Relax
If your hair is currently braided, but you’re itching to switch it up, give your head a break. Braids can stay in for almost 12 weeks with proper care, but we recommend keeping your braids in for 8 weeks at most. After 8 weeks you might make your hair and scalp dehydrated. Before getting your Fishers Box Braiding appointment take your braids out. It helps if you let your hair recover naturally for a week before you braid your hair again. This helps relieve some of the stress your hair has endured. Space your hair braiding appointments out a little so you can include time for your hair to relax before getting it braided again.
Be sure to wash and detangle your hair with a deep conditioning treatment the night before your appointment at Ramas. This will make your hair smooth and easy to style without tangles or knots.
Have Your Box Braid Style Ready
Before you call Ramas for your Fishers Box Braiding appointment, have what you want your hair to look like in mind. Do you want your braids long or short? Thin or thick? Will your want to add color or charms to your braids? All of these questions are important to have answered in your mind before talking to one of our stylists. The more prepared you are, the better we can estimate how long your appointment will take and a price for you.
If you want long braids but have short natural hair, you are going to need extensions. Our friendly staff can recommend hair extensions when you call to make your appointment, but it is definitely worth it to do some more research on your own. We recommend looking into braiding hair packs made of synthetic fibers. These packs are not only cost-effective, but they are made for braiding! They can withstand the extreme heat and tension needed to keep your braids together.
Keep Your Edges and Scalp Clean
Keeping your scalp clean is a must when your hair is in braids. With box braids, everyone will be able to see your scalp. Prevent buildup and oil on your head with a scalp by cleansing your scalp with witch hazel. Making a spray at home is easy with witch hazel, tree oil, lavender oil, and distilled water.
If you find that your scalp feels right and sore after getting your hair braided, there are ways you can relax your edges to relieve the tension on your scalp. This happens when braiders pull hair too tight. During your appointment, let your stylist know if your scalp hurts and they can adjust their technique. If your scalp is too tense and sore, it can cause headaches. To find relief, relax the edges of your braids with a little coconut oil. Don’t use it every day, and make sure it’s alcohol-free.
Be sure to wash and detangle your hair with a deep conditioning treatment the night before your appointment at Ramas. This will make your hair smooth and easy to style without tangles or knots.
Wear a Silk Headscarf At Night
A Braiding appointment can sometimes take hours. After you’re done with your Fishers Box Braiding appointment, you’ll probably want to take a nap. Our recommendation to all of our customers to maintain their braids is to wear a silk or satin headscarf to bed. If you don’t like wearing headscarves to bed, you can swap your pillowcase out for a satin or silk one instead. This will help, but it won’t contain your hair like a headscarf will.
Hair often gets damaged from friction. When you sleep, you can cause damage to your hair as you toss and turn. Keeping your hair in place and on a soft fabric will reduce the friction your hair experiences overnight.
Be sure to wash and detangle your hair with a deep conditioning treatment the night before your appointment at Ramas. This will make your hair smooth and easy to style without tangles or knots.
Keep Your Box Braids Clean & Dry
Braids get a bad rap for being called dirty, but there’s nothing dirty about them. They’re only dirty if you don’t take care of them. Although you don’t wash your hair in the shower like you traditionally would, there are still ways to keep your head clean after your Fishers Box Braiding appointment.
We recommend wearing a shower cap in the shower to keep your braids dry as long as possible. You will also want to avoid swimming. When you need to wash your braids, we recommend using a water-based mousse. Apply mousse to your braids, pull your braids into a low ponytail and tie them down with a silk or satin scarf. In about an hour, your braids will be smooth and fresh. Use grapeseed oil afterward to prevent a mess.
Be sure to wash and detangle your hair with a deep conditioning treatment the night before your appointment at Ramas. This will make your hair smooth and easy to style without tangles or knots.
Keep Your Braids Looking New
If you have extensions in your hair, after the fusing process they might crate fly away hairs in your braids. Your stylist should trim them for you, but if you notice them afterward, get some shears and trim them yourself to keep your hair looking great
Braids can last anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months long with proper care and maintenance. You should also clean your braids by spraying them with moisturizing oil to keep them looking shiny and new.
Be sure to wash and detangle your hair with a deep conditioning treatment the night before your appointment at Ramas. This will make your hair smooth and easy to style without tangles or knots.
